How does it work and why do I need several treatments?

The bursts of light form the VPL/ IPL machine heat the hair follicles and make the root incapable of further hair growth. The reason you have to come for several treatments is that this only works if the hair is in the growth stage. Hair will be in one of three stages; growth, dormant or dead and we choose your treatment interval to give us the best chance of catching each follicle in its growth stage before the end of your treatment course.

What does the treatment involve and does it hurt?

You will wear eye protection throughout the treatment because of the high intensity of light produced by the equipment. We will cover the treatment area with a special gel we call 'optical gel'.  This is usually applied straight from the fridge so it helps to keep your skin cool but it's main purpose is to help with the transmission of light from the applicator head into the skin. You will feel the therapist press the applicator head against your skin and trigger a short pulse of high-energy light.  She will then move the applicator head to the next position and trigger another pulse, and so on until the whole area has been treated.  Because of the large size of the applicator head - 5 square cm - this procedure is quite quick. Finally the gel is removed and you will receive a liberal application of aloe vera to moisturise the treated area. In some circumstances we may put cooling pads on you to ensure your skin is totally cooled before you leave the clinic.

You should find the treatment quite comfortable. When the light is emitted there is a sensation of a hot pinprick - some people say it's like being flicked with an elastic band.  VPL/ IPL is the safest and most comfortable way of removing hair quickly.

Whats the Recovery Time?

Normally you wont need any recovery time. However in some circumstances where the treated area has a high density of dark thick hair we will apply some cooling pads. On rare occasions clients have experienced redness of the treated area for up to half an hour.

Don’t worry about your makeup.  For facial treatments we will have to remove your makeup but after the treatment we will apply our own mineral makeup – just ask your therapist - so that you can leave with your head held high!

We advise clients not to apply makeup immediately after treatment as a general rule but, in fact, mineral makeup is fine – it’s known as the "skin care makeup" as it is anti-bacterial, non-clogging and acts as a sun protection factor.  It’s really good stuff and was developed for people who wanted high coverage makeup following laser skin resurfacing.  We can show you the pictures when you come in!

How many treatment will I need?

We have to work with you on this one as a lot depends on the result you want.  As a guide, sustained hair loss can be noticed after 3 treatments but total hair loss normally takes between 5 and 8 treatments. The interval between treatments is about 6 weeks but this varies from person to person and area to area.

What does it cost?

The treatments work out at around 50 per visit for small areas.  The treatment programmes are priced individually depending on the area to be treated but your consultation is free of charge so please come to the clinic for the best advice. Discounts are given for multiple areas and if youre a student well give you a further 10% discount.

Are there any reasons why you might not allow me to have treatments?

If you are pregnant you are going to have to wait until after the happy day. If you suffer from epilepsy or light induced skin rashes then VPL/ IPL isnt for you.

VPL/ IPL is ineffective on red, white or grey hair and fine blond hair can be difficult to treat.  We will only offer you treatments if a test patch is successful

Certain conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome can affect the overall result of the treatment and further treatments are often required.

You must avoid suntans while on a course of IPL treatments.

Are there any risks?

Our experience is that there are fewer risks with VPL/ IPL hair removal than with other methods, including lasers, waxing and plucking. At the light energies required for hair removal there are no risks for pale skins. When VPL/ IPL is used on darker skins there can be a risk of hyper or hypo pigmentation (lightening or darkening of the skin), for this reason we always test darker skins for sensitivity.  In rare circumstances tiny red spots develop around the hair follicle after treatment. These will disappear within a few days.

There are no long-term adverse side effects.

IPL hair removal has FDA approval in the USA for both efficacy and safety.

Why use Variable Pulsed Light over other IPL/ Laser systems?

We use Variable Pulsed Light (VPL)  as it's the most advanced Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal system available.  Unlike laser, which is restricted to only producing a single wavelength of light, VPL/ IPL uses a range of wavelengths specifically chosen as the optimum for maximum absorbtion of the light energy by the pigment in your hair (melanin).  VPL/ IPL also has the unique ability to infinitely configure a series of micro pulses that will not only effectively treat both fine and medium hair, but do it safely with no damage to your skin whether it be white or brown or somewhere in between.  In fact, VPL/ IPL is so safe it will actually rejuvenate your skin at the same time.  It is the most comfortable method of permanent hair reduction available.
