 What causes warts and verrucas?
Warts are small, harmless tumours of the skin caused by a virus, the human papilloma virus.
Common warts typically develop on the hand. They are grey to flesh coloured and are raised.
Plantar warts typically occur on the bottom of the feet, in high presurised areas such as the heel. They grow into the skin, which makes them more difficult to treat conventionally.
Finally there are flat warts, which typically appear on the face and back of the hands. These can spread rapidly from shaving for example.
How to remove warts and verrucas
There are many over the counter wart treatments available , typically salicylic acid. These can either be painted onto the area or applied via a specially treated plaster.
Applying these treatments must be done very carefully as the acid can damage the surrounding skin. Also available, your doctor can freeze them off using liquid nitrogen or you can have them surgically removed, which could result in scarring.
IPL is the very latest treatment for the removal of warts in the skin. IPL cause the casing to break on the wart, which causes the body to create anti-bodies. This in turn produces an antiviral effect.
