Scar Removal Treatment Fact Sheet

Treatment Types - Scar Removal

  1. Treatment by Microdermabrasion to refine atrophic scars including Acne and Chicken Pox scarring.

  2. Treatment by a combination of Microdermabrasion and Regenerative Peels to refine atrophic scars including Acne and Chicken pox scarring and blemishes.  A course of Intense Pulsed Light may be required for vascular and pigmentary blemishes.

Suitability for Scar Removal

Suitable for males and females of any age, skin type or skin colour looking to remove the incidence and severity of scarring, and achieve a smooth skin free of surface irregularities and a clear even complexion.

Aims of Scar Removal Treatment

To achieve a smooth skin free of surface irregularities and a clear even complexion:

  • Increased production of new skin cells.

  • Permanent stretching of the connective tissue restraining atrophic (indented) scars.

  • Close enlarged pores.

  • Smooth skin surface

  • Removal of unwanted pigmentation

  • Removal of visible blood based lesions in the skin

Scar Removal Treatment Overview

The affected area is treated using a series of Microdermabrasion (Mda) treatments that stimulates the production of increased collagen and elastin whilst stretching the connective tissue causing the depression in indented scarring.

This process effectively re-trains the skin to grow evenly creating a permanently smooth skin surface.  SkinGenesis utilizes unique microdermabrasion machines capable of operating at high vacuum without crystals.

This treatment is optimally combined with several regenerative peels which thicken and firm the skin.  As part of a combined course, high strength complementary at home products are supplied to achieve the best possible results.

Where the scarring consists of pigmented or vascular blemishes the area can also be treated using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) in conjunction with the Mda treatments.

IPL treatments selectively target the blemishes reducing melanin production and removing blood based lesions. When IPL is used it is applied after the Mda treatment.

Recovery Time after Scar Removal Treatment

For most clients no recovery time is needed. Normally clients should expect the treated area to be slightly red for about half an hour after treatment although in some circumstances the redness may last for up to 24 hours.

Typical Scar Removal Course Duration

The amount of treatments depends on the expected result. A significant reduction in the severity of scarring is normally noticeable after a course of 10 treatments, with a treatment interval of about 1 week.

Further improvements are noticeable after further courses. When IPL is necessary it is normally administered with a 2 or 3 week interval.

Scar Removal Cost (full face)

Consultation, free of charge.

A trial microdermabrasion treatment, or a trial peel, is available for £35. A course of 10 weekly Peel and Mda treatments costs from £1049 including the high strength at home products.

There is an additional charge for IPL treatments.

Contra Indications for Scar Removal Treatment

Microdermabrasion is not advised where the client is susceptible to keloid (raised) scarring.

Clients who suffer from broken capillaries, diabetes or eczema should discuss this at time of consultation.

Clients on medication are advised to consult with their GP prior to consultation although this treatment works well in conjunction with most other acne treatments.

Risks

There are virtually no risks with this treatment.

A small number of clients may experience a slight redness, but this normally disappears within 30 minutes.

In circumstances where clients have exceptionally thin and fragile skin mild short term bruising is possible but extremely rare. All clients are tested for allergic reaction before treatment.

There are no long-term risks or adverse side effects.

Other Benefits

Microdermabrasion, Regenerative Peels and Intense Pulsed Light are excellent treatments for reducing the incidence and severity of acne breakouts.

These treatments are excellent at rejuvenating skin and can repair sun damage.

What is a Microdermabrasion treatment?

Prior to treatment the area is thoroughly cleaned with a gentle cleansing solution. Each treatment involves passing a wand over the area to be treated. The wand emits crystal that loosens dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. The dead skin cells and crystal are simultaneously vacuumed away in a process that massages the skin in a manner designed to improve circulation, promote new cell growth and benefit the lymphatic system. The treatment provides a thorough exfoliation and the high vacuum unblocks congested pores.

What is an Intense Pulsed Light treatment?

Eye protection is worn for the duration of the procedure. The area to be treated is covered in a special optical gel. The gel will keep the area cool while enabling the transmission of light into the skin. A light applicator is pressed against the skin and a short pulse of high-energy light is emitted treating all blemishes in an area of 5cm2. The applicator is then moved to an adjacent area and the process is repeated until all the area has been treated. The gel is then removed and aloe vera is applied to the treated area. In some circumstances topical cooling may be applied to the treated area.

What is a Regenerative Peel?

Prior to the treatment the area is thoroughly cleaned. The area is then painted with layers of specially formulated acid according to your prescription. A warm tingling sensation is experienced. The area is then covered with cold wet flannels and the acids are activated. This activation process takes about 5 minutes during which the client feels a warm tingling sensation. The flannels are removed and the area dried. The skin is then treated with vitamin C serum and a vitamin and peptide enriched cream.
