What causes the PCOS hair growth? The excess hair growth is caused by an hormonal imbalance resulting in women having a high level of the androgen hormones. These are the hormones, such as testosterone, that are known as 'male hormones' but are, in fact, present in all women. It's just that PCOS women have higher levels than normal. The hirsutism that can arise from PCOS shows itself as thicker and darker hair growing on the face and body. The areas most commonly affected are the moustache and beard, though the extra hair growth may also be noticed on the chest, back, stomach, arms, legs, and pubic region. While it is a fact that not all women with PCOS will have hirsutism, nearly all women with hirsutism will have PCOS.
