Back Acne Treatment works with the tough skin on your back
Back acne is a problem for many people. Much of what we talk about on our main acne treatment page applies to back acne, but there are differences. The main difference is that the skin on your back is much thicker and tougher than facial skin and so the chances of getting a severe nodule or cyst is higher. Back acne affects about 2 out of every 3 facial acne sufferers and most often affects men. In fact about 20% of all healthy adult males (source acne.org) are thought to have some back acne. The causes of acne are dealt with on our main acne treatment page and the troublesome sebaceous glands exist in their thousands on your back. There is another cause of back acne, however, and this is often referred to as 'acne mechanica'. This is when the skin is repeatedly rubbed by clothing or anything that presses on the skin, e.g. a backpack or certain types of gym equipment. You can try to avoid acne mechanica by wearing loose breathable clothing and avoiding anything that irritates your skin or puts pressure on it, especially when you have active acne. As always, paying attention to the right skincare products usually helps a lot. For example, if you shower a lot you need to take care that your shampoo and body wash are not upsetting the pH balance of your back. If the skin on your back feels dry this is often a sure sign that the protective 'acid mantle' has been stripped away leaving the acne bacteria to multiply without check. Choosing low pH shampoo and body wash (pH 5.5 is ideal) can often bring rapid improvements. Your SkinGenesis skin specialist can advise you on this and recommend low pH products.

However, where this isn't enough, the good news is that we can apply the same treatment principles to back acne that work so well for facial acne. Our treatment programmes can be adapted to treat back acne and are so effective that the relative toughness of the skin on your back is no obstacle to getting great results.
