The Do's and Don'ts for Great Skin

DO

·    Exfoliate. Our Microdermabrasion treatment is an excellent way to exfoliate. You can also use (but not within 24 hours of Microdermabrasion) a good microbead scrub that contains AHA.s, BHA.s (Lactic, Salicylic and Glycolic acids /fruit acids) and/or tea tree oil. Use a scrub as often as your skin will allow.

·     Moisturise. Especially at night. We prefer a non-comedogenic moisturiser, which allows the pores to breath. Useful ingredients in a moisturiser are vitamins including retinol. We stock an excellent range of moisturisers and our therapists will be happy to advise you.

·     Protect. During the daytime use a UV filter. Many moisturisers now contain UV protection up to factor 10. This is perfectly adequate for everyday use. In summer, if you intend to spend several hours in direct sunshine use a higher factor sunscreen.  We stock a range that will suit you and our therapists will be happy to advise you.

·     Vitamins. Consume lots of vitamins and minerals. Skin needs copious amounts of vitamins and minerals, especially A, C, E and zinc. If in doubt about your diet take the best multi vitamin you can afford (Quest Super are good), cod liver oil and an additional 2 x 500mg of vitamin C. Double this if you are over 45 or live a hectic lifestyle.

·     Exercise. Daily. Exercise shouldn't be uncomfortable, but ideally should make you slightly flushed and a little breathless. 30 minutes brisk walking or swimming is ideal. Exercise makes the blood flow and gets nutrients to the skin. You’ll notice that athletes tend to have thicker skin and thick skin is more elastic and less inclined to sag – and they look good!.

·    Smile. Smiling exercises the facial muscles. It might cause a few expression lines but the alternative to a firm lined faced is a saggy miserable one (and probably with frown lines rather than laughter lines). You choose!

·    Sleep. It really is good, so get as much as you can Zzzzzzzz?..

·    Time. Give your programme time. It can take up to 15 weeks for SkinGenesis treatments to reach maximum effect. Improvement in diet can take up to 6 months before it is noticeable. Set yourself a 6- month timetable to get a flawless skin using diet, lifestyle and SkinGenesis treatments. We will help you. Follow the programme with commitment and you can reduce your visible appearance by up to ten years in age.

DON'T DO

·     Sunbeds. UVA radiation is harmful to skin cell DNA, sunbed UVA is light with all the good stuff filtered out. If you must have a tan and don't want a bottled tan, use real sunlight. Think why you need a tan. If you want to have a healthy, glowing, flawless complexion, follow our programme.

·     Sugar and transfats. Sugars and refined carbohydrates are best avoided. They upset your blood sugar levels and the effects of glycation attacks cell DNA from within. It is far better to fill up on richly coloured fruit and veg and eat lots of protein from good quality meat, fish and dairy produce. Only natural fats are good fats - avoid anything else, especially margarines. 

·      Bad things. Like drinking and smoking. Cut down if you can't stop. Feel really guilty if you can't cut down. Everything is all right in moderation, and for the bad things that's 3 glasses of red wine and one cigarette. Per Day!! Caffeine is just about tolerable. The best way to get your caffeine is green tea, which is rich in polyphenols and other antioxidants. Still water and tomato juice are the health drinks of choice.

·      Impatient. If you want to let your skin look naturally healthy you have to give nature a chance. It won't happen overnight. Allow at least three months plus a week for each year of neglect.
