The Importance of Preparing Your Skin Before Non-surgical Treatments

Secret Number 4

The Importance of Preparing Your Skin Before

Non-surgical Treatments

Non-surgical treatments work because of the way the skin responds to the treatment. The treatments stimulate natural processes in the skin such as producing more collagen and elastin, and promoting the creation of healthy new skin cells.

It follows that the better your skin is able to respond to the treatments, the sooner you will get the result you are looking for.  Paying attention to making sure your skin is as responsive as possible should be your priority in the days before your first treatment.

At the consultation we will carry out a thorough Expert Skin Health Analysis (exclusive to SkinGenesis) which will incorporate (1) ultra-violet (UV) photo examination, (2) an acidity check on the surface of your skin, and (3) a moisture content reading.  The Analysis will guide us in recommending skin care products and a regime that will tackle any areas for improvement that may have been revealed.

(1) By taking images of your skin under UV light we can look for hidden sun damage, problems with sebaceous glands and general levels of hydration.

(2) The acidity (pH) check is very important as pH impacts in two ways.  Firstly, the pH plays a part in controlling the naturally occurring bacteria levels on the surface of the skin with obvious implications for acne prone skin.  If the pH is too high, bacteria will be able to multiply, increasing the chances of spots and breakouts, so it is vital to get the pH down to an optimum level.  The other effect of your pH being too high is that the outer membranes surrounding the skin cells will have a reduced ability to retain moisture.  Getting the pH level right will improve hydration, and the general health of the skin cells, and reduce any tendency towards dry skin.

(3) Finally, taking a snapshot of the moisture content of your skin will highlight any problem areas and complete the overall picture the Expert Skin Health Analysis gives us.  It’s worth knowing that good skin cell hydration is important as it’s the means by which nutrition is carried into the cells and waste matter carried away again into the lymph system.

The level of preparation needed depends on what is revealed by the Expert Skin Health Analysis.  A priority will be ensuring the pH is at its optimum level.  For most people this is a reading of between 5 and 6, and if there is an imbalance, this can be achieved through careful selection of the right skin care products.  Most important is to use a skin wash/ cleanser that has a low pH (5.5 or lower).

If hydration is a problem then it may also be worth using a good quality moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid.  Otherwise monitoring your fluid intake and ensuring an adequate supply of antioxidants to protect against environmental, sun damage, lifestyle damage (drink/ smoke) will all help!
