The Truth about Food! |
|
Does drinking water keep your skin fresh and hydrated? And will chocolate bring you out in spots? Here at SkinGenesis we’re particularly interested in how the way we eat can affect how our bodies work, and so we’ve been keenly following the BBC’s programme, The Truth About Food. This Thursday, the 8th of February, the episode focuses on how to stay young and beautiful, so we thought we’d shatter some myths ahead of the programme and talk to you about how what you put into your body can affect how you look on the outside. We’ve always been told that the more water we drink, the fresher and clearer our skin will look, and the number of top models backing up this theory would seem to suggest that this might be true. But you might be surprised to learn that cutting out the mineral water won’t actually affect the appearance of your skin. All the drinks that your body consumes during the day, with the exception of alcohol, will count towards your daily total. In addition, a large proportion of the water your body needs can be found in the food you eat so, unless you’re doing a large amount of exercise and losing a lot of water, you won’t need to drink a large amount of extra water in order to stay healthy. And so what about junk food? Will that extra bar of chocolate or portion of chips have a negative effect on your skin? Believe it or not, there is actually no evidence that the occasional binge on junk foods will affect your skin at all, although an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to bad skin as well as a multitude of other health problems. But as long as they are enjoyed in moderation, the occasional treat won’t affect your skin. So those are a few skincare myths busted. But what about the things you can do to ensure your skin stays at its best? Making sure your body gets enough Vitamin A will maintain the balance of your skin, ensuring that it stays healthy and hydrated as well as preventing dryness and irritation. Good sources of Vitamin A are liver, fish liver oils, kidneys, dairy foods, eggs, carrots and dark or yellow vegetables. Fatty acids are also great at maintaining the structure of the skin, so making sure you get the right type of fat in your diet will ensure your skin remains healthy looking. Fatty acids can be found in oily fish, vegetables and red meat. Overall, the best tip we can give you is to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly, as a healthy lifestyle is the easiest way to ensure that your entire body is functioning at its best. In addition, a good skincare routine will ensure the surface of your skin remains healthy looking – a good quality cleanser balanced for your skin, followed by moisturiser and sun protection should be the bare minimum for us all. Sometimes choosing the right products for your skin can be daunting so don’t hesitate to give our experts a call for some free advice. So there’s no need to panic if you leave your water bottle at home, or give in to temptation occasionally and treat yourself to a chocolate bar. Maintaining a balanced and healthy diet, with a little of what you like every now and then, will ensure your skin looks fresh and hydrated at all times.
