Healthcare Commission Explained

We talk frequently about the importance of using clinics registered with the Healthcare Commission but what does this actually mean and what do the Healthcare Commission do?

The Healthcare Commission is the health watchdog in England . Their purpose is to check that healthcare services are meeting standards in a range of areas, including safety, cleanliness and waiting times.

They have a statutory duty to assess the performance of healthcare organisations, award annual performance ratings for the NHS and coordinate reviews of healthcare by others.

The healthcare commission aim to:

* safeguard patients and promote continuous improvement in healthcare services for patients, carers and the public
* promote the rights of everyone to have access to healthcare services and the opportunity to improve their health
* be independent, fair and open in our decision making, and consultative about our processes

With regards to independent healthcare, The Healthcare Commission regulates the registration of independent healthcare providers. This includes private hospitals, independent clinics, hospices, anywhere that provides medical treatment under anaesthesia or sedation, dental treatment under general anaesthesia, childbirth (or maternity) services, medical services, termination of pregnancies and cosmetic surgery (including facelifts, liposuction, tummy tucks and breast surgery). They also regulate the use of lasers and intense pulsed lights, including procedures ranging from Hair Removal to eye surgery.

When registering independent providers, the Healthcare Commission ensures that they meet the minimum standards of practice. This includes the quality of treatment, checks of premises and equipment, qualifications and skills of staff, policies and procedures, training and professional development, and complaints procedures.

All independent clinics and hospitals registered with the Healthcare Commission are required to have a policy to deal with complaints. If you are unhappy with a treatment, you should tell your provider and give them the opportunity to discuss and resolve your complaint. If you are still unhappy, you can make a complaint to the Healthcare Commission, the Independent Healthcare Forum or Trading Standards. If you would like to complain to the Healthcare Commission, you can call them on 0845 601 3012.

Independent healthcare providers in England must be registered with the Healthcare Commission. To register, they need to demonstrate compliance with the Care Standards Act 2000 and associated regulations. The Healthcare Commission tests providers compliance by assessing each registered establishment against a set of National Minimum Standards, which were published by the Government for that purpose and set out the expected standards for different types of independent health services.

Inspections are targeted to areas of potential risk. They focus on areas where previous inspections, the establishments own data and inspectors observations suggest potential risks. Further areas are also added as spot checks. In general, a smaller number of standards assessed at inspection reflects a strong ability in the establishment to demonstrate satisfactory performance.
