We were surprised to read this week that the government has decided not to impose regulations on the way Botox treatments are provided. Here at SkinGenesis, all of our Botox and dermal fillers are delivered by a qualified doctor, but legally anyone trained to give injections can deliver Botox, something which we believe sets a dangerous precedent.

In 2005, the Expert Working Commission on Cosmetic Surgery recommended that Botox should be monitored by the Healthcare Commission in order to safeguard patient security. However, the government have taken the decision that the industry should take the lead and has asked cosmetic surgeons to regulate themselves.

Worryingly, under current legislation almost anyone could set up a clinic offering Botox and dermal fillers, and without the proper expertise the results of these treatments cannot be assured.

We’re glad that the government has recognised that many professional clinics within the industry, including ourselves, have shown a great commitment to self-regulation and ensuring our patient’s safety and comfort is paramount. However, we are also aware that a lack of regulation means there is an opportunity for many unscrupulous people to set up clinics which may be unsafe and potentially dangerous.
