SkinGenesis sponsors Miss Leeds |
Beauty contests tend to get some bad press, and here at SkinGenesis we had always believed the clichés about beauty queens. However, when we met Becky Baker, the current Miss Leeds and SkinGenesis client, we began to change our perspective.
The 22 year old, a student at Leeds University, wanted to prove that there is more to being a beauty queen than just looking pretty. She commented “In the past beauty pageants were just about looking pretty whereas now, if you become Miss England you can actually do something with it.”
We were impressed with Becky’s attitude, and although she is a natural beauty we put together a package of treatments to help her fulfil her goal. Becky had Agera regenerative peels and our new laser teeth whitening treatment in the run up to the competition which took place in Leicester on July 14th. She said “I loved the fact that the treatments were all natural and so easy to fit in between my studies. The staff were great and backed me all the way. I felt I looked great, and am really grateful for their support. ”
Unfortunately Becky didn’t win the title of Miss England, but she looked great and proudly promoted us as her sponsors!
As well as being Miss Leeds, Becky is entering the final year of her degree and is also committed to her volunteering work. She used the competition as a chance to promote her involvement with the Non-Violence Project, a worldwide organisation which aims to change children's attitudes and behaviour in connection to gratuitous violence.

Why the sun can actually be good for you |
What a scorcher! According to Met Office figures, July was the hottest month since records began in 1914, and I feel sure everyone is enjoying the feel good factor that a good dose of sunshine brings (when we are not at work that is!).
Although it’s still important to take precautions to prevent sun damage, which we at SkinGenesis subscribe to wholeheartedly, exposure to the sunshine can actually be good for you. We’ve tried to sort out the fact from the fiction to let you know just what the benefits can be of soaking up a few rays.
There seems to be a wealth of new medical evidence around at the moment showing that spending up to 15 minutes* in the sun without protection every day can help reduce the risk of many illnesses, including breast, colon and prostrate cancer. According to the studies, when the body is exposed to UVB rays it produces Vitamin D which helps with many vital processes. Vitamin D helps regulate cell processes in the body, telling cells when to divide, when to stop dividing and when to die. This can help prevent the growth of tumours, therefore inhibiting cancers.
Vitamin D also helps with the body’s absorption of calcium and phosphate from food, and so is essential in the formation of bones and teeth. It helps bones grow, and so a deficiency of Vitamin D can lead to rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults.
Osteoporosis, common amongst women particularly after the menopause, is characterised by reduced bone density which often leads to fracture and is more prevalent among those in countries which do not see regular sunlight. Multiple Sclerosis is also more common in those who live further from the equator, and it is believed risks are decreased by exposure to sunlight.
We all feel happier when the sun is shining, and there is a lot of medical evidence to suggest that sunlight hitting the skin can reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder (“SAD”). SAD is a depressive disorder related to lack of light and is thought to affect up to 10% of the average population, increasing to 20% in countries like Sweden where daylight hours are decreased for months on end. Spending a short time in the sun each day has been proven to reverse the affects of SAD, increasing energy levels and improving mood.
Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) is also believed to be improved by sun exposure. Calcium is widely thought to reduce the symptoms of PMS and as Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, exposing your skin to sunshine can reduce its effects. Chronic skin conditions, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis are also improved by UVB rays, something which has been recognised by medical experts who try to synthesise the sun’s healing effects using lightboxes.
You can buy Vitamin D tablets, but scientists believe that the Vitamin D your body makes naturally when exposed to the sun is much more effective than in tablet form. You can’t get too much Vitamin D, so taking tablets as well as exposing yourself to the sun could mean increased protection from certain diseases. The authorities in Australia take the benefits of Vitamin D so seriously that bread is even fortified with it.
In the UK, the way health advice is presented to the public regarding suncare is changing in order to stress the importance of some exposure, showing a changing tide of opinion on the subject.
Remember, although the benefits of spending time in the sun without protection are numerous, 15 minutes* is the maximum time advised and if your skin is pale and you burn easily, it is recommended that this is reduced. Any burning of the skin is still damaging, and so after exposure it is recommended you cover up immediately and seek some shade, and apply a high factor sun cream if you are going out in the sun later in the day.
* 15 minutes is a sensible guide based on the time taken for a white skinned person to synthesise the recommended daily amount of Vitamin D with 10 to 20 percent of their body exposed (arms and back or chest). Latest research from America shows that people with darker skin can require up to four times as much time in the sun to produce the same amount of vitamin D, which the authors thought might be responsible for the higher cancer rate in black Americans.

Beauty Queen chooses SkinGenesis for Laser Teeth Whitening |
We were delighted to welcome Becky Baker, crowned Miss Leeds earlier this year, to the clinic for one of our new Laser Teeth Whitening treatments. Becky is preparing for the Miss England competition in July and was delighted with the brightness of her teeth after her visit.
Becky (pictured centre) said:
“My teeth were already quite white but I am amazed how much cleaner they now look. The treatment only took an hour but I was in the clinic for a bit longer as the SkinGenesis staff were very thorough in ensuring I had all the facts before going ahead with the treatment. This was very reassuring as I’m now so close to the Miss England contest I had to be sure I would get a good result. Thanks to the professionalism of SkinGenesis I can look forward to dazzling the judges!”
The professional Laser Teeth Whitening treatment that Becky had is now available at the SkinGenesis clinics in Leeds and Manchester at the breakthrough price of £275 (limited offer) – half what you would pay at the dentists!
Please call your local clinic for more details.

Walk for skin, fixed by Jim |
|
The British Skin Foundation's Walk for Skin, on Sunday 21st May, marked the end of Sun Awareness Week for thousands of people across the country. One of the venues for the Walk was Bramham Park, a beautiful private estate near Wetherby, and so Amanda and Clare (and her beautiful baby daughter Eve) dug out their boots and went along to join in.
As is the way in drought stricken Britain, the whole of Sun Awareness Week turned out to be cold and damp and the Walk for Skin took place under heavy skies and some persistent rain. However, our intrepid duo were undeterred - buoyed up by the good wishes of our generous clients who had sponsored them.
On completing the course, they were congratulated by Sir Jimmy Savile OBE who took pity on them. Clare told us "He was very kind and even offered to take us to his home to dry out!"
“We really enjoyed it,” said Amanda. “Despite the rain, it was good fun and nice to be able to raise money for the charity. We see so many people with skin complaints such as acne and it can be distressing. This is a great cause!”
The walk in Leeds was one of 11 walks nation-wide organised by the British Skin Foundation, which is a charity supporting research into skin disease. “We’re really grateful to the SkinGenesis team for not letting the rain dampen their spirits and for joining the walk to raise money for skin disease sufferers. Every penny raised by the British Skin Foundation will be put towards much needed research to help find new treatments for the skin diseases that blight so many people’s lives. Thanks for your support!” Said Nina Goad at the British Skin Foundation.
Working closely with patient support groups as well as many of the country's leading dermatology departments, the Foundation aims to help the 7 million people in the UK who suffer with a serious skin condition.
Our thanks to all concerned.

SkinGenesis MD on the radio! |
|
Our MD Peter was invited to talk about sun awareness on the Ian Thomas show for local community radio station Wythenshawe FM.
He duly arrived at the appointed hour and was quickly settled down by the production team. Despite being called Brian a couple of times by a confused presenter, Peter was able to talk about the effects of the sun and give useful advice to listeners in support of the British Skin Foundation's current sun awareness campaign:
-
Always use a sunscreen on exposed areas of your body of at least spf 15
-
Reapply your sunscreen frequently
-
Seek shade between 11am and 3pm
-
Keep children under the age of 3 out of the sun at all times
-
Ensure older children wear spf 30 on all exposed areas of the body
