Winter is here - time to prepare your skin |

We've had the first cold snaps and all the indications are that it is going to be a cold, wet winter so weve put together a list of our top tips for keeping your skin looking fresh and healthy between now and the spring.
In much the same way as the hot sunshine can cause problems for our skin, the cold and wet can also play havoc.
Winter sees our homes and offices become warm and dry places because of the constant use of central heating systems and we immediately step outside from this into the cold throughout the day so it is important to prepare and protect our skin.
Winter Skin Top Tips:
1. Replace soap with a water soluble cleanser and wash your face with lukewarm water. Soap dries the skin by stripping it from natural, protective oils. A high quality gentle cleanser will help maintain your skins natural balance.
2. Consider using a humidifier in your home or at work, the extra heat circulated by heating systems can dry out the air. As an alternative you can place a bowl of water near a radiator.
3. Dont forget the SPF! When the temperature is lower many of us forget the sun's harmful rays, make sure you continue to apply sun protection factor of at least 15.
4. Moisturise religiously. You should apply a heavy layer of moisturiser on a cold day to fight back against the elements.
5. Wear gloves. Your outer extremities will feel the effects of winter more quickly than the rest of your body, a pair of gloves will make sure that the moisturising you are doing isn't in vain
Be careful when exfoliating. Don't exfoliate too often and dont overuse products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids. Exfoliation is good for dry skin but it also leaves the new layer of skin unprotected from the cold weather.

The Truth Abount Stress and Your Skin |
Did you know that stress can have a major effect on your skin?
We've all heard about how feeling anxiety can cause the usual things like high blood pressure, migraines and the like but did you know that you are actually more likely to see the impact of stress on your skin? Your skin is your largest organ and not just a barrier to keep negative influences at bay, it is also a window into our health with direct connections to the brain.
In just the same way as we blame external influences such as food, dust or the weather for the state of our skin, our internal mood can be an equally important factor.
The Science
If you feel tense or under pressure, your hypothalamus sends a signal to the pituitary gland which then sends information to your adrenal glands that produce the stress hormone cortisol. This is known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
Once cortisol is in our system it causes inflammation in reaction to stress which in turn produces oxidants that damage cells.
So, what does this mean to your skin? When a pore is inflamed and swollen it is more likely to become clogged and when collagen becomes inflamed, the matrix breaks down and results in wrinkles. Acne, dryness and itching also appear with inflammation and are signals of whats going on inside.
Treatment
At SkinGenesis we have noticed that we see more young people with problems needing acne treatment around exam time, and indeed a recent survey discovered that teenagers acne breakouts become 23% worse at exam times.
Preventing skin problems has to come through a combination of regular skin care, healthy diet, exercise and also taking control of our emotions, a problem shared is a problem halved. It is all too easy to get lost in a downward spiral when you feel under pressure, you will deal with it much better if you give yourself a break, put your feet up and relax once in a while. Using this mantra will have a positive effect on your skin.

Positive Effects of the Smoking Ban Chapter 2 |

In our September newsletter we reported how people that gave up smoking when the ban came in could expect to see differences in the health of their skin.

A recently published study in the 'British Journal of Dermatology' found that in 1,000 women aged between 25 and 50, 42 per cent of smokers suffered from acne compared to one in ten non-smokers. It seems that smoking acts as a stimulant that can increase levels of the hormone testosterone in our bodies. While commonly thought of as a male hormone, women also have a certain level of testosterone and, if this is boosted by smoking, those that have a sensitivity to testosterone are more likely to get acne.
