Compelling new statistics from a survey of 25,000 men and women filled the news headlines last week when it revealed 51% of young women would have surgery to improve their looks. The survey of mostly 17 to 34 year olds, conducted by BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat and 1extra’s TXU in February, also discovered more than 20% of female respondents said they were on a diet and more than half would change lots about their bodies. The pressure to look slim remains despite condemnation of size zero models and celebrities, so it’s not surprising to learn that a third of those surveyed who are a size 12 think that they are overweight or fat, as do a staggering 66% of those who are a size 14. This seems crazy when the national average is a size 16, and even more crazy if you figure the survey found both men and women rated a curvy Martine McCutcheon as having the best body. So what exactly would men and women change about their bodies? Well breast enlargements topped the poll as the most desired cosmetic enhancement, but liposuction was a close second for women and topped the wish list for men. It’s a fact that as we get older, pockets of fat around our lower body become increasingly hard to shift through diet and exercise. But liposuction is extreme and there are non-invasive alternatives such as our targeted fat reduction programme that complements the good work you are already doing with your diet and exercise lifestyle. And just this week the debate about size is back in the news. ITV has broadcast “The Truth About Size Zero”, a programme fronted by footballer’s wife Louise Redknapp. Sadly newspapers are this week reporting that the programme, in which the petite singer loses 5kg and drops 2 dress sizes in a grueling 30 day plan to reach size zero (UK size 4), has actually provided anorexics with diet tips and food information. Needless to say, there are healthier ways to achieve your ideal size and shape and excellent nutrition is at the heart of this, which is why we include ‘Optimum Nutrition’ supplements with our SkinGym anti aging programme – and the supplements are available to all our clients. |
