Hair Removal Treatment Fact Sheet

Treatment Type - Hair Removal

Hair removal using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).

Hair Removal Treatment Objectives

Permanent reduction in the number of follicles capable of actively producing unwanted hair.

Suitability for Hair Removal treatment

Suitable for males and females of any age over 16, most skin types, and colours, looking to achieve long term reduction in the amount of unwanted hair.

Hair Removal Treatment Overview

Hair is removed by a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments that heat the hair follicles and makes the root incapable of further hair growth. It is only possible to disable the follicle root if the hair is in the growth stage. Hair will be in one of three stages; growth, dormant or dead

IPL is the very latest treatment for hair removal. IPL Hair Removal uses specific wavelengths of light that are the optimum for absorption by the melanin in hair yet at the same time minimizing the trauma to the skin. IPL differs from laser by being able to deliver greater energies at optimum wavelengths while causing less damage to the skin. These qualities make IPL more effective and safer than laser. Unlike laser treatments IPL is excellent for hair removal on darker skins

Treatment commences with a thorough cleansing of the area. Eye protection is applied for the duration of the procedure. The area to be treated is covered in a special optical gel. The gel will keep the area cool while enabling the transmission of light into the skin. A light applicator is pressed against the skin and a short pulse of high-energy light is emitted treating all hair follicles in an area of 5cm2. The applicator is then moved to an adjacent area and the process is repeated until all the hair follicles have been treated. The gel is then removed and aloe vera is applied to the treated area.

Most clients find the treatment quite comfortable. When the light is emitted there is a sensation of a hot pinprick.  IPL is the safest and most comfortable way of removing hair quickly

Normally, after treatment it may take between 7 to 14 days for the hair to fall out.

Recovery Time after Hair Removal

For most clients no recovery time is needed. However in some circumstances where the treated area has a high density of dark thick hair topical cooling may be required. Clients may experience redness of the treated area for up to half an hour.  In some circumstances this may be longer.

Typical Hair Removal course duration

The amount of treatments depends on the expected result. Sustained hair loss can be noticed after 3 treatments. For total loss, more treatments will be needed dependent on the area treated and the individual. The normal treatment interval is about 6 weeks.  However this  may vary from person to person and area to area.

Contra Indications for Hair Removal

IPL hair removal treatments should not be carried out if the client is pregnant or breast feeding, suffers from epilepsy or suffers from light induced skin rashes

The treatment is ineffective on red, white or grey hair

Fine blood hair can be difficult to treat.

Certain conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome can affect the overall result of the treatment and further treatments are often required

Clients should avoid suntans, self tanning and spray tans, while on a course of IPL treatments.

Risks

Our experience is that there are fewer risks with IPL hair removal than with other methods of depilation, including lasers, waxing and plucking. At the energies required for hair removal there are minimal risks for pale skins.

When IPL is used on darker skins there can be a risk of hyper or hypo pigmentation, for this reason we always test darker skins for sensitivity.  Dependent on the area treated, tiny red spots may develop around the hair follicle after treatment. These will disappear within a few days.

  • There are no long-term adverse side effects.
  • IPL hair removal has FDA approval in the USA for both efficacy and safety.

What is an Intense Pulsed Light treatment?

The gel will keep the area cool while enabling the transmission of light into the skin. A light applicator is pressed against the skin and a short pulse of high-energy light is emitted treating all blemishes in an area of 5cm2. The applicator is then moved to an adjacent area and the process is repeated until all the area has been treated. The gel is then removed and aloe vera is applied to the treated area. In some circumstances topical cooling may be applied to the treated area.
