Treatment Type - Freckles Treatment

Treatment by   Microdermabrasion and Intense Pulsed Light to reduce Freckles and other Pigmentation.

Suitability for Freckles Treatment

Suitable for males and females of any age, skin type or skin colour looking to remove freckles and achieve a clear even complexion. This treatment is unlikely to be effective on persons with red hair.

Aims of the Freckles Treatment

  • To achieve a clear even complexion
  • Removal of unwanted freckles

  • Reduction of melanin production in affected areas

Freckles Treatment Overview

The affected area is initially treated with Microdermabrasion (Mda). Microdermabrasion stimulates a higher rate of skin renewal speeding up the dispersion of existing melanin. Simultaneously excess keratin is cleared from the stratum corneum allowing more effective penetration of light to the effected malanocytes.

The freckles are then treated using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL treatments selectively target the excess melanin in the freckles reducing melanin production capability of adjacent melanocytes. The  IPL treatment is applied immediately after the Mda treatment.

Freckles Treatment Recovery Time

For most clients no recovery time is needed. Normally clients should expect the treated area to be slightly red for about half an hour after treatment although in some circumstances the redness may last for up to 24 hours.

Typical Freckles Treatment Course Duration

The amount of treatments depends on the expected result. A reduction in the severity of the freckles is normally visible after about 3 treatments, with a treatment interval of about 3 weeks. The number of treatments required depends on many factors, including the age, depth and initial severity of the freckles. Some superficial freckles can be cleared in around 3 treatments but in some circumstances well-established freckles can require in excess of 10.

Freckles Treatment Cost

  • Consultation, free of charge.

  • The treatment price depends on the area to be treated. Treatments on the face range from £60 to £180

Contra Indications for Freckles Treatment

Due to the high incidence of a type of melanin called phaeomelanin in clients with red hair this treatment has a very low success rate with red haired clients.

Microdermabrasion is not advised where the client is susceptible to keloid scarring. Clients who suffer from broken capillaries, diabetes or eczema should discuss this at time of consultation. IPL is not suitable if the client is pregnant or suffers from epilepsy.

Risks

  • Some clients will find the treatment uncomfortable.  Because of the high energies required there is a risk of burning or blistering of the treated area. The risk is very small however and is further reduced by effective cooling of the treated area.  In rare circumstances clients have experienced short term swelling of the treated area.
  • There are no long-term adverse side effects.

Other Freckles Treatment Benefits

  • IPL skin treatments have the additional benefit of having a rejuvenating effect on the skin.

  • IPL treatments are excellent at repairing sun damage.

What is a Microdermabrasion treatment?

Prior to treatment the area is thoroughly cleaned with a gentle cleansing solution. Each treatment involves passing a wand over the area to be treated. The wand emits crystal that loosens dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. The dead skin cells and crystal are simultaneously vacuumed away in a process that massages the skin in a manner designed to improve circulation, promote new cell growth and benefit the lymphatic system. The treatment provides a thorough exfoliation and the high vacuum unblocks congested pores.

What is an Intense Pulsed Light treatment?

Eye protection is worn for the duration of the procedure. The area to be treated is covered in a special optical gel. The gel will keep the area cool while enabling the transmission of light into the skin. A light applicator is pressed against the skin and a short pulse of high-energy light is emitted treating all blemishes in an area of 5cm2. The applicator is then moved to an adjacent area and the process is repeated until all the area has been treated. The gel is then removed and aloe vera is applied to the treated area. In some circumstances topical cooling may be applied to the treated area.
